Flag football play makers and playbook apps: free and paid options

There are now several tools built for drawing flag football plays, and they cost anywhere from nothing to more than $100 a month. Here is what each one does, what it costs, and who it suits, so you can pick one before the season starts rather than halfway through it.

Key takeaways
  • Most coaches need four things: drag-and-drop drawing, the right field for 5v5 or 7v7, wristband printing, and a way to get plays to players.
  • Fully free options exist. ReadyRef's play maker is free with no sign-up; Playmaker and RC Football have limited free tiers.
  • Paid tools earn their price with big play libraries (FirstDown PlayBook), film and quizzes (Football Play Card), native apps (Playmaker X), or AI play drawing (Playwrist, RC Football).
  • Check the field size and player counts first. A tackle-football tool with fewer players is not the same as a flag tool.

A note on bias: ReadyRef makes one of the tools on this list, and it's listed first. We've tried to describe every tool fairly, including where a paid tool does more than ours. Prices are in US dollars as shown on each vendor's own website or app store listing on October 22, 2026. Prices and plans change, so check the vendor's page before you buy.

What to look for in a flag football play maker

  • Flag formats. 5v5, 6v6 and 7v7 use different player counts and field widths. A good tool sets up the right field instead of making you delete tackle players.
  • Fast drawing. You'll draw dozens of plays. Drag-and-drop players and routes that snap cleanly matter more than a long feature list.
  • Wristband cards. Most flag teams call plays from a wristband play sheet. Check which card sizes a tool prints and whether that's on the free or the cheapest paid plan.
  • Animation. Watching a play run teaches timing far better than a still diagram, especially for kids.
  • Sharing with players. A link, an image for the team chat, or a player app. Find out whether players need an account.
  • Price per season. Flag seasons are short. A monthly plan you can cancel may cost less than an annual one.

"Not stated" means the vendor's page didn't mention it when we checked, not that the feature is missing. MOJO Sports is a play library and coaching app, not a play designer.

1. ReadyRef Play Maker (free)

ReadyRef's play maker runs in any browser, on a phone or a computer, with no account. You drag players onto a 5v5, 6v6 or 7v7 field, draw routes, pre-snap motion and the ball's path, and give each player a one-line callout. It draws defense too: zone, man and rush defenders, or one of our ready-made defenses, and any offense play can run against a defense so you can see where it's open. "Watch it run" animates the play, defenders included, and you can save that animation as a GIF for the team chat or save the play as an image.

A playbook holds up to 48 plays. You can print wristband cards (1 to 12 plays per card, in common wristband sizes or a custom size), a matching coach's call sheet, and full-page play sheets on regular 8.5 × 11 paper. You can start from our free play library or from plays other coaches have shared, and switching between 5v5 and 7v7 converts a play instead of wiping it. Plays are saved in your browser and can be shared by link.

If you sign in to the free ReadyRef app, you can save your plays to your account, and team coaches can add plays to a team playbook that players on that team can see.

Where it falls short: it has no game film, no player quizzes and no AI play generation, and no native iPhone app (the web app works on iPhone).

Best for: volunteer and rec coaches who want to draw, animate and print a season's playbook without paying or signing up.

2. Flag Football Playmaker X

Flag Football Playmaker X is a dedicated flag football app for iPhone, iPad and Android that also runs in a browser on a computer. It has settings for 4 to 9 players per side, draws offensive and defensive plays, and animates any play with one tap.

Price: bought directly from the vendor, Paperless is $5/month (app plus cloud sync), Print is $7/month (adds wristbands, playbooks and call sheets), and Team is $9/month (adds app access for your whole team). The same plans cost more through the App Store ($7.99, $10.99 and $12.99 a month). There's a free trial with no payment details required.

The same company's older Flag Football Playmaker HD app for iPad and iPhone is still listed. Its free version allows one playbook with up to 3 offensive and 3 defensive plays, but it hasn't been updated since 2020.

Best for: coaches who want a native app on their phone or tablet and want players to have the playbook on theirs.

3. FirstDown PlayBook

FirstDown PlayBook is a web-based play designer best known for its library. Its flag page lists thousands of editable flag plays, offensive and defensive, for 4v4 through 8v8, including plays drawn with USA Flag. It prints wristband sheets in three sizes, and a player app for iOS and Android shows your playbook on players' phones.

Price: flag plans are $75 for 90 days or $150 a year for one user, and $250 for 6 months or $400 a year for a full team of up to 30 users. There's a free trial with no credit card needed.

Best for: coaches who would rather pick and tweak proven plays than draw from scratch, and programs with a budget.

4. Football Play Card

Football Play Card is a web app that works on computers, tablets and phones. It has flag formation presets, play animation, wristbands with full play diagrams, and share links that players can open without installing anything. Its higher plans add game film storage, call sheets and quizzes, and there's a marketplace of paid 5v5, 6v6 and 7v7 playbooks.

Price: the cheapest individual plan is $9/month or $36 a year, and it includes animation and wristband printing. Team plans start at $99 every 6 months or $192 a year. Every new account gets a 7-day free trial with all features, and player accounts are free.

Best for: coaches who want one paid tool for playbook, wristbands, film and player quizzes.

5. Playmaker (playmaker.click)

Playmaker is a free multi-sport play designer with flag football templates for 5v5 and 7v7. You can design and animate plays with no account, and share links play the animation on any phone. It also has a free wristband maker that builds cards from a typed list of play calls.

Price: free forever with 3 saved plays per account and a small watermark on PNG exports. Pro is $6/month or $50 a year for unlimited saved plays and watermark-free PNG and PDF export. The site says video export isn't available yet.

Best for: coaches who want quick animated plays to share by link and don't need diagram wristband cards.

6. RC Football

RC Football is a browser-based designer with a drag-and-drop canvas and AI that turns a plain-English description into a play diagram. Its format list includes 5v5, 5v5 NFL FLAG, 6v6, 7v7 and larger. It also has a wristband tool, a sideline coach's sheet, and drills and practice plans.

Price: the free plan includes 10 AI actions a month, 1 team and 2 formations, but no wristband, playbook or coach's sheet exports. Coach is $9/month or $49 a year, and Coach Pro is $19/month or $99 a year. The paid plans add an interactive play simulator.

Best for: coaches who like the idea of describing a play and letting AI draw the first version.

7. Playwrist

Playwrist is a newer browser-based designer, currently in beta. It covers 5v5 to 9v9 with rule presets for NFL FLAG, USA Flag, IFAF and others. You can draw plays by hand or describe them in plain English, and an AI "coordinator" critiques plays. Every plan can animate plays and print wristband sheets.

Price: Playbook (no AI) is $6.99/month with no free trial. Coach ($9.99/month) and Program ($19.99/month) add AI credits and come with a 7-day trial. Paying yearly is cheaper.

Best for: coaches who want rule-set presets and AI feedback, and are comfortable with a beta product.

8. MOJO Sports (plays, not a designer)

MOJO Sports is NFL FLAG's official app partner. It's free to download and includes the NFL Flag Playbook on video, along with drills, practice plans, scheduling and team chat. We didn't find a custom play designer in it, so it's a good source of ready-made plays rather than a replacement for a play maker. MOJO+ is an optional in-app subscription.

Best for: NFL FLAG league coaches who want official plays and practice plans in one free app.

What about PowerPoint, Google Slides or a whiteboard app?

Plenty of coaches still draw plays with shapes and arrows in slides or a design tool. It's free and familiar, but you set up the field yourself, nothing animates, and wristband cards rarely print at the right size without some trial and error. A flag-specific tool usually saves that time within the first few plays.

How to choose

  • No budget, or a short rec season: start free. ReadyRef's play maker covers drawing, animation and printing; Playmaker is good for quick shareable animations.
  • You want plays already drawn: FirstDown PlayBook's library, or MOJO Sports for NFL FLAG plays. Our free play library and beginner playbook are a smaller free starting point.
  • Players should have the playbook on their phones: Playmaker X (Team plan), FirstDown PlayBook's player app, or Football Play Card's free player accounts. ReadyRef's team playbook in the app does this for free.
  • You coach a competitive or travel team: film and quizzes (Football Play Card) or a big library (FirstDown PlayBook) may be worth paying for.

Whatever you pick, try it with three real plays and print one wristband card before the season. That shows you more than any feature list.
