How many players are on a flag football team?
Flag football is most often played 5 on 5 — five players from each team on the field at once. Teams carry a slightly larger roster, usually 7 to 12 players, so they can substitute. A few formats change the count, and that's what trips people up.
- The standard game is 5v5 — five players per team on the field.
- Rosters usually run 7 to 12 so teams can rotate substitutes.
- 7v7 puts seven a side; 4v4 puts four a side.
- There are no required positions — line up your players freely.
- The 2028 Olympic format is 5v5 with 10-player rosters.
The short answer
In the most common format — the one NFL FLAG and the upcoming Olympics use — there are five players per team on the field, or ten total. Most teams keep a few extras on the sideline, so a typical roster is around 7 to 10, and leagues often cap it near 12.
Players on the field by format
- 5v5 — five per team. The default for most rec, youth, and NFL FLAG leagues, and the Olympic format.
- 7v7 — seven per team. More common in older youth, high school, and adult leagues; the bigger field opens up the passing game. See 7v7 rules.
- 4v4 — four per team. A faster, smaller-field variant popular in pick-up and some youth programs.
- 6v6 / 8v8 — used by some regional and adult leagues, less common nationally.
The field size scales with the count — see flag football field dimensions for the measurements that go with each.
How big should your roster be?
For 5v5, aim for 7 to 10 players. That's enough to rest tired legs and cover absences without leaving half the team on the sideline every play. Go much above 10 in youth ball and kids lose reps and interest; go below 7 and a couple of no-shows can leave you short. For 7v7, scale the roster up to roughly 10 to 14 for the same reason.
Positions and substitutions
Flag football doesn't require set positions the way tackle does. In 5v5 you'll typically have a quarterback, a center, and receivers on offense, with a rusher and defenders on the other side — but a player can do different jobs from snap to snap. Our positions guide breaks down each role.
Substitutions usually happen between plays, when the ball is dead. Most leagues let you sub freely as long as your players are set before the snap. Rotating in fresh legs is a real advantage in a fast, running-clock game.
